A typical Malaysia trip runs you between $900-$1,500 per person for a 7-10 day itinerary which typically includes flights, hotels, and tours you will take there. If you are budget-focused, you can make do under $700 with backpacking-level accommodations and street food.

The best time to visit Malaysia is during the months of December to April when the weather is pleasant and the dry season. This will be the perfect time to take in all of Kuala Lumpur, have beach time at Langkawi, enjoy the heritage food scene in Penang, or roam the multicultural heritage streets of Malacca.

May and October are the best times to visit Malaysia because it will cost less to travel during those months. They are considered shoulder seasons and offer cheap flights, cheap hotels, less tourists, as well as weather that will be comfortably warm for sightseeing or running around on islands.

Malaysia is known for the KLCC, Petronas Towers, Batu caves and waterfalls, Langkawi beaches, Penang street food, Malacca UNESCO world heritage houses and sites, but it is also known for experiencing the Melay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous cultures and how they all come together as people.

Thailand is typically marginally cheaper in general to visit as a tourist (accommodation and street food mainly), but generally the travel in Malaysia is affordable, and it is infrastructure allows for a superior experience while still giving the traveler excellent value per their budget.

Major airline companies to Malaysia include Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qatar Airways, that operate most routes also to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) with the most direct service and great connections throughout.

The off-season is between March and October when it’s rainier than other times of year. It will rain, but you should have less tourists, lower prices, and good cultural experiences in Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

For a round-trip flight to Malaysia, $500–900 is the typical cost. The cost will depend on your season, airline, and departure city. Costs are significantly lower when you book early and go during the off-season.

Kuala Lumpur is by far the most visited place in Malaysia, and is famous for the Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, shopping in Bukit Bintang, and the food stalls down almost every street in every neighbourhood. Langkawi and Penang are not too far behind.

Malaysia has a tropical climate so it never really gets cold. January is somewhat cooler with average temperatures of around 23–29°C, and especially in the highlands of Genting, and Cameron Highlands.

Travelers who visit Malaysia should be vaccinated for Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine vaccinations. Depending on regions’ varied areas, vaccination for Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies are possible recommendations.

Don’t plan on traveling to Malaysia during November, if you can help it due to some areas experiencing disruption to travel from very heavy monsoon rains. The strong winds in Langkawi and the islands on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia results in lost of outdoor activities.

Airlines which may have direct access to Malaysia include Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad. Most international flights enter the country through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).

To travel around Malaysia, the best options are flying domestic, express bus, and train. A rapid bus or train such as the metro can be a good option in the city if you want cheaper than getting some Grab taxis.

The best airlines to travel to Malaysia are Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Qatar Airways because they also offer comfort, direct routes, and premium in-flight services for long international journeys.
